Memory is sabotaging your AI. Here's how you stop it (prompt Included)

Hello Reader

If you use ChatGPT, this is ESSENTIAL information about the memory update that is a risk to your work and output: "alignment drift through affirmation".

In other words, ChatGPT becomes a "yes man" if you don't balance and calibrate memory. Other LLMs are expected to introduce memory functionality soon, so even if you're not a ChatGPT user, hold on to this info.

I'm leaving a memory audit prompt below, but you should read on.

I believe Memory is the most evolutionary feature yet for everyday users, and I it will quickly unlock tons of new use cases and capabilities (and I'm working on some awesome prompts that take advantage of memory)...

BUT there are some real risks and pitfalls if you're not careful.

I suspected ChatGPT was over-validating my work when it told me that a mediocre and off-brand asset "Slapped". This is the asset. It's YouTube thumbnail. I think it's well made, but too busy and not aligned with the tone of the Viable Edge brand I'm trying to develop.

This moment led to a memory audit. I discovered ChatGPT's tendency to affirm my perspective, leading to a drift in favorable alignment, and hence over validation.

In short, this means that ChatGPT will "yes" you more and more over time because it remembers what you respond positively to, but at the risk of the efficacy of the output.

To manage this, I created a dedicated chat to audit and balance memory where I can directly manage how ChatGPT might challenge me across different categories. This chat is pinned and I can check in on this aspect of memory as needed, but I'll be doing it frequently to monitor on-going memory.

As mentioned, I created a prompt (I'll drop it in the comments) you can use yourself for this and I highly recommend anyone who uses ChatGPT do this ASAP.

Thanks,

Adam

Prompt is below:

“I want to audit and recalibrate your memory settings. Please summarize how you currently interpret my tone, feedback style, preferred depth of reasoning, and how much challenge you believe I want in response to my ideas or prompts. Then, create a short table rating each of the following from Low to High based on how you think I currently want you to behave:

Challenge my assumptions during strategic planning Flag ethical or reputational risks in public content Offer alternative creative or structural directions Point out when my tone is too safe or expected Call out circular logic or missing reasoning

After presenting that table, ask me to review and adjust each setting to reflect my actual preference. Once I respond, update your internal memory to reflect those new preferences and confirm back with a revised calibration summary.

Finally, activate a more proactive, high-friction mode if my answers suggest I want high challenge. Going forward, prioritize surfacing tension, counterpoints, and sharper insight—even if it risks pushback.

**This memory audit is part of a structured effort to improve critical thinking, friction-aware creativity, and bias reduction when working with an AI assistant.”
